The Cottage
For the 1st of May bank holiday weekend we were invited to join a friend at her cottage in Wales. We were all the way at the end of the Llyn Peninsula near the town of Aberdaron. This lovely little building is actually 2 adjoining cottages. We stayed in the left side. Very cozy. I can’t imagine the days when an entire family squeezed into such a tiny space!
Beautiful Countryside
The cottage sits about half way up a mountain (or a big hill), depending on whether you are British or American in your experience with mountains. Hiking up from the roadway it definitely felt mountain-like! The views were beautiful. The gorse was in bloom, the baby lambs had just been born, and from the cottage all we could see were lamb covered hillsides and the sea. Very few people ventured past.
Jess at the Well
Ah, yes. The “roughing it” aspect of the cottage. The word basic comes to mind. Here Jess draws water from the well, located about 10 minutes away from the cottage. It was a lovely walk over with an empty bucket, and I won’t say what she thought as she carried the 5 gallons back across the mountain!
The Big Sky
I always thought Montana was the “Big Sky Country”, but Wales put on a good show too. We were blessed with lots of blue skies and sunshine, something we’ve sorely missed while living in London.
Baby Lamb
These cute little fellows were everywhere on the mountain. This one was photographed from the front door of the cottage as he hurried to catch up with his Mama.
Caernarfon Castle
Our friend Sophia gave us a good tour of the area, including a day out at Caernarfon Castle. Here’s where the Prince of Wales gets “princed”, or whatever they call it when he gains his title.
Picnic on the Beach
Jess picnics at a beach in Wales with cliffs towering above. Okay, from this vantage point things look mountainous.
Fisherman's Cottage
A fisherman’s cottage near the beach, with traps and gear just waiting to go.
Waves at Whistling Sands Beach
This place was cool. As we walked on the sand it “scrunched” under our feet making a unique noise. That wasn’t the only unique thing either…at all the beaches we visited we saw British folk sunning themselves and taking a quick dip in the sea, while we walked along in our COATS. There is something uniquely British about believing that 50 degree weather is beach weather, just because the sun pops out!
Lone Lamb
A lone lamb enjoys his grazing patch, oblivious to the beautiful coastline behind him.
